- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 ¾ cups (345 g) all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
For decorating
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 2–3 tablespoons milk
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- Red and green food coloring
- Christmas sprinkles
- Melted chocolate (optional)
- Extra powdered sugar for dusting
Instructions
- Prepare the dough: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add wet ingredients: Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Combine dry ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture until a soft dough forms.
- Chill the dough: Cover and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes.
- Cut the cookies: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface to about ¼ inch thick. Cut into stars, trees, and other festive shapes.
- Bake: Place the cookies on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 8–12 minutes, until the edges are lightly golden.
- Cool: Let the cookies rest on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Decorate: Mix powdered sugar with milk and vanilla until smooth. Divide into bowls, add food coloring, and decorate with icing, sprinkles, or melted chocolate. Dust some cookies with powdered sugar if desired.
